Purpose:

The purpose of this project is to let people experience the shift of different stages of consciousness in mind without using the drug. We chose anesthesia as our precious topic because it is the way for people getting unconscious/partially unconscious. However, we do not want to limited by medicine.

Idea Development:

To create an experience by letting people be unconscious is unpracticable for our current project, so we decide to focus on the experience of local anesthesia.

The primary function of anesthesia is to block the body's signal, in which people are conscious but lost part of their body control.

Mor suggests us to think about mind tricks instead of using drugs since we want to focus on the conscious but lost senses. There is another direction for us which block people's signal when they are aware but cannot have the feeling from outside.

Research Process:

Body Tricks:

I looked for some YouTube videoes(Operation Ouch, 2017) of body tricks, discover some secrets of our body.

Block the signal:

I looked for the function of the medicine, anesthesia. How does it work?

From the explanation form pharmacology, the anesthesia would block the pain only; patients can maintain a sense of touch. (NHS, 2018)

Prototype 1:

The function of anesthesia inspired me, which also remind me of the idea, block pain but remain other senses.

We planned to use some unique material that soft but can block pressure from outside.

After asking for help from the 3D workshop, we failed. There is no such material that matches our requirements.

Prototype 2:

Carol mentioned another idea, which upgrades the concept of "block pain but remains touch."

Through experiments, the cold and warm combo could create a sense of numbness, which could let the participant's getting loss but remains the sense of touch.

We sketch the box that may have three layers and asking for help from the 3D workshop.

Put a hot water bag at the bottom and cotton balls surrounding, with a plastic paper that could balance the temperature. Also, on the top, we put an ice bag hanged by another plastic paper.

To make the experience into a realistic scene, we made another video that would create an operating room circumstance for the participant.

The video which the participant would watch and hear during the process:

Summary:

It's a beautiful ending for this semester. Thanks to all my group members, we've all put lots of effort into this project. We fully engaged in each step, spend lots of time digging into our topic. The outcome was impressive and the process was also indelible. It's my pleasure to work with those girls.
